Be Used To

In this lesson of Learning English as a Second Language, we shall learn:

  • Be Used To
  • The difference between Used to and Be Used To
  • Structure of Be Used To
  • Short Replies in Be Used To

We have already done Used To and in that lesson we learnt how to express Past Habits , Repeated Actions and Situations. Today we will learn Be Used To it looks like Used To. When you look at Be Used To you can easily mistake it with Used To. You must remember that there is a great difference between Used To and Be Used To.

Difference between Used To and Be Used To

Be Used To is used to express that some thing is common for you. In other words if you want to tell that something is really easy for you and you have plenty of knowledge about it and you are really familiar with it and it is not strange for you, you will use Be Used To.

For Example:

I am used to horses. (It means that I know all about horses or being with horses is easy and not strange for me)

I am used to driving cars. (It means that driving a car is easy for me and it is not a new thing for me . I am completely familiar with it.)

The biggest difference between Used To and Be Used to is that Used To shows Past Time but Be Used To shows Present Time.

For Example:

I used to play cricket . ( It means that I am expressing a Past Habit using Used To) (Showing Past Time)

I am used to playing cricket. (It means that playing cricket is not new for me and I am familiar with it) (Showing Present Time)

Be Used To with Objects and Actions:

You can use Be Used To with both Objects and Actions.

For Example:

I am used to cars. (Here I am not talking about any action just talking about an object CAR)

I am used to driving cars . (Here I am talking about action of driving cars)

Structure of Be Used To

Subject + Be not +Used To + (Gerund)

Be + Subject +  Used To + (Gerund)?

I am used to Playing hockey I am not used to Playing hockey Are you used to playing hockey?

Subject + Be Used To + Object Subject + Be not+ Used To + Object Be + Subject +  Used To + Object?
She is used to cold weather She is not used to cold weather Is she used to cold weather?
He is used to cars He is not used to cars Is he used to cars?
 

Short Replies in Be Used To:

A: Are you used to playing hockey?

B: Yes , I am.

C: Are you used to cats?

D: No, I'm not.

Ali: Is she used to parties?

Sara: No, she isn't.

Exercise of Be Used To:

Exercise No.1: Add an appropriate form of be if necessary. If no form of be is necessary, leave the space blank.

e.g.

1.    I _____ used to live in a cottage.

2.    I am used to living in a forest.

  1. I have lived in Pakistan for a long time. I used to living in Pakistan.
  2. I used to live in Pakistan, but now I don't live in Pakistan anymore.
  3. She used to cleaning my room every Sunday.
  4. They used to cars.
  5. When she was a child, she used to play with her friends a lot.
  6. People used to be superstitious.
  7. People used to watching TV a lot nowadays.
  8. My mother used to snoring while sleeping.
  9. My Grandfather used to travel a lot when he was young.
  10. I used to swimming in the sea.

E.g.    computers  --------->   I am used to computers

Sie can we make a sentence like this if it is wrong could u pls explain me

1.when she was a child she didn't used to play with her friends.
2 My father doesn't used to visit his country so often after he settled to India.

Both of the sentences are wrong. The correct sentences are;
1. When she was a child she didn't use to play with her friends.

You are using DID and with it you cannot use 2nd from of a verb, so you need to use the first form of Used.

The second one I didn't understand myself what you want to express in it.

Kindly provide me with necessary information about the sentence, what you want to express in it.
